Piet Hein Tunnel

In the city of Amsterdam a road and trainway tunnel is constructed. The tunnel consists of 8 elements of 160 m length. The elements are built in a construction dock at Antwerp (Belgium) and are towed over the Western Scheldt from Antwerp to Flushing, over the North Sea from Flushing to IJmuiden and through the Noordzee-kanaal from IJmuiden to the final destination in Amsterdam.

Svašek Hydraulics has executed a statistical risk assessment of damage of tunnel one of the elements by wave action during the transport on the North Sea from Flushing to IJmuiden. Also tank tests were performed to determine the behaviour of the elements in wave action.
