Beira coastal erosion
|
||||
|
Beira is Mozambique’s second largest city and the country’s major port, with a population of about
three hundred thousand. It spreads along seven kilometres of the Indian Ocean coast, at the mouth of the
Pungue River.
The city of Beira suffers seriously from erosion along the ocean beach. Several existing coastal protection structures are damaged and the risks of flooding of parts of the city are increasing.
In the inter-city relationship between Amsterdam and Beira the erosion problems were raised as a main
issue in the development of Beira. On behalf of the city of Amsterdam an inventory of the erosion
problems is made and a preliminary feasibility study on remedial measures is made, focusing on
minimum investment solutions.
