Dredging works of the Betuweroute

The Betuweroute is a double track freight railway linking the Port of Rotterdam directly to the European hinterland. The length of the Betuweroute is 160km. The railway will be placed on a layer of sand. The sand supply will be one of the biggest logistic aspects for the construction of this railway. From an economic and safety point of view, the sand will be supplied by means of hydraulic transport. The work contained i.e. a study of on-shore and off-shore sand sources and the determination of an environmental and geotechnical feasible working method.

The following services were provided:
- inventory of all the relevant sand sources,
- optimisation sand source - sand destination through lineair programming,
- desalination for those locations were sand from off-shore sources is envisaged,
- calculations of hydraulic transport capacities,
- phasing of the reclamation related to the very weak sub-soil conditions,
- detailed planning of filling and construction activities,
- cost estimates,
- development of methods to minimise the silt load of process water discharge.
